Explore an immersive outdoor courtyard that brings six global interactive ecosystems powered by EPAM to life. Featuring life-sized animal sculptures, touchable wildlife prints and audio interpretation, each planter represents a unique environment and the species that call it home. Interpretive panels and illustrations highlight the stories behind the animals, offering a hands-on journey through Earth’s incredible biodiversity.
Six Global Environments in One Courtyard
Our Courtyard features six meticulously designed planters, each representing a distinct global environment. As you wander through the space, you will encounter:
- The Tropical & Temperate Forests: Home to lush greenery and bronze sculptures of iconic species.
- Polar Regions & Deserts: Discover the resilience of life in Earth’s most extreme climates.
- Grasslands & Oceans: Explore the vast biodiversity of our vast landscapes and deep waters.
Each station is paired with sensory-rich elements, including immersive nature soundscapes and tactile animal tracks. Examine the footprints of a giant river otter and observe a life-sized emperor penguin tending to its chick.
Into the Field: A Cutting-Edge AR Experience
Step into the role of a National Geographic wildlife photographer with "In the Field AR," powered by EPAM. Using a sleek, intuitive mobile app, visitors can watch as the Courtyard comes to life on their screen featuring twenty unique animals interacting in their spaces.
Witness these magnificent animals — from a stalking jaguar to a wandering albatross — appear in breathtaking detail right before your eyes. This immersive experience allows guests of all ages to step into the shoes of a wildlife photographer, capturing photos of diverse animals in their virtual natural habitats. The interactive app also features animal fact cards, providing an educational deep dive into the behaviors and spaces of each species you encounter. Store your favorite photographs as a digital souvenir of your journey, all while fostering a deeper understanding of how healthy ecosystems sustain plants, animals and humans alike.
A Destination for Curiosity and Conservation
Whether you’re looking for educational family activities in D.C. or a quiet moment to connect with nature, the Courtyard offers a meaningful journey before you even step inside the museum. Through interpretive displays and compelling storytelling — like the tale of a hardy tortoise or a clever octopus — we highlight the unique biodiversity that makes our planet worth protecting.
The Courtyard is free to the public and local community during the day, serving as an accessible hub for inspiration and discovery. Come experience how we are using cutting-edge technology to illuminate the beauty of the natural world and inspire the next generation of Explorers.
