Bringing Spirit of Exploration to Summer

Since opening the doors to the National Geographic Museum of Exploration (MOE) on June 26, it’s been such a joy being part of everyone’s summer adventures in Washington, D.C. From a jam-packed Grand Opening Weekend complete with live music and our Evening Street Fair, to celebrating America’s National Parks on the Fourth of July, we’ve been proving that exploring and finding joy can, and should, go hand in hand.

There’s nothing like some live music to kick off your weekends during summer. Try finding a local musician playing a new set in your favorite park, or catch your favorite artist playing on tour.

If you are looking for live music in Washington, D.C., our outdoor summer concert series brings live music performances to the Courtyard, showcasing vibrant rhythms, sounds and traditions from cultures around the world. You can sip on drinks with friends, explore our signature museum exhibitions and discover incredible new musicians and bands.

On July 24 at 6 p.m., we’re thrilled to feature Sangat: Sonny Singh, Ria Modak & Sukhmani, who will be playing South Asian diasporic music that channels ancestral wisdom. Drawing inspiration from ancient mystical poetry, this performance centers on oneness and connection during times of division and hierarchy.

Master the Art of the Summer Picnic

Whether you’re picnicking solo or with a group, reading a book and snacking in the sunshine is one of summer’s signature delights. Plus, it’s a great excuse to try a new summer recipe.

If you’re looking to try a new recipe for your picnic, stop by your local farmer’s market, like the National Geographic Farmstand, to pick up some fresh produce that’s in season. When you stop by the Farmstand, you can also pick up baked goods and other sweet treats to round out your spread.

And, be sure to grab your favorite summer read from your local bookshop, or at the Museum Shop, so you can make the most of your golden hour.

Break Up Your Week with Fun Plans

It’s easy to assume that summer fun is just for the weekend. But, if we want to reignite our spark and celebrate our curiosity, it’s important to embrace what made summer as a young explorer so joyful — the fact that adventures and activities could happen anytime, any place.

So, try breaking up your week with fun mid-week plans by giving yourself something to look forward to on a Tuesday or Wednesday. This could look like stopping by the MOE after work to stroll through the galleries, grabbing an afternoon iced coffee at the Barista Bar with a colleague or catch one of our evening events.

For example, Nat Geo Nights on July 23 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m, where the museum will transform into an exclusive, after-hours 21+ party packed with live music, art and interactive activities. This summer's theme, America's National Parks, invites you to hear gripping stories from National Geographic Explorers while seeing our exhibitions through a nighttime lens.

Soak Up the Sunshine

There’s nothing like summer fun in the sun, especially when it involves appreciating the beauty of the wonder of our world at the beach or by the water. If you’re able to, walk along the beach or sit by your local river. Or, go for a local nature walk.

Whenever you visit the MOE this summer, afterward you can soak up some rays by the water. Whether you take a stroll along the Georgetown Waterfront, hop on a paddleboat at Tidal Basin, or watch the boats at the Wharf, getting near the water is the ultimate way to cool down and reflect on your day of discovery.

Keep Exploring

We can’t wait to continue helping everyone ignite their spark and unlock their inner explorer through joyful discovery. We hope you are able to make the most of your summer with this guide, and we’re excited to see you at the MOE soon.
