Everyday Curiosity: How to Explore Beyond the Weekend
September often signals a shift back to rigid routines and the end of summer fun. But summer's real magic isn't just the warm weather — it’s the cultural permission to indulge in wonder, try new things and follow our curiosity wherever it leads.
But, who says following our curiosity is just for summer months? As we like to say, exploration is a mindset, not a destination — and certainly not a season. It’s year-round, and our National Geographic Explorers know that best. They are relentlessly curious, and that is what encourages them to push boundaries, uncover new perspectives and ask how we can better protect the planet, even on a regular Tuesday afternoon. And, it is what makes them find so much joy in the little things, because even a small step in the direction of illuminating and protecting the wonder of our world is monumental.
So, taking inspiration from our incredible Explorers, the National Geographic Museum of Exploration (MOE) is here with a few helpful perspectives and tips to bring the spirit of exploration into your routine.
#1 Build a Weekday Schedule You Look Forward To
Sometimes the simplest way to break up weekday monotony is to treat Monday through Friday as an opportunity rather than a waiting period — giving yourself dedicated moments to look forward to and making sure that curiosity is always built into your schedule. It can feel easier said than done, but that’s because we often treat plans like items on a to-do list that drain our remaining energy.
But, the key here is to craft intentional moments that pull your week forward rather than adding to your workload.
For example, if you know you prefer to have your weeknights to yourself, perhaps you meet with friends or coworkers for coffee ahead of the start of the day. Or, having standing plans with friends or coworkers, like attending Trivia Nights at the MOE on Wednesdays, guarantees joy is always on the calendar while reducing your mental load. It can even be as simple as having a new book to look forward to reading, or a craft or hobby you’ve been meaning to try.
#2 Switch Up Your Daily Routine
Indulging your curiosity can also happen in the smallest, mundane moments. Small variations in your habits wake up your brain and offer fresh inspiration right in the middle of a standard workweek. That can look like adding a new accessory to your workday outfit, or opting for a new coffee shop to get your regular morning order.
And, if you come to Coffee with an Explorer on September 29, your latte can also come with a spark of real-world discovery as you chat with real-life National Geographic Explorer and marine ecologist Anjali Boyd about coastal ecosystems and global conservation.
#3 Deep Dive on a Topic
When the daily grind starts feeling repetitive, spending just a brief window learning about something entirely outside your usual routine and work expertise can completely reset your perspective and re-energize your mind.
That could look like picking a topic you’ve always wanted to learn more about and assigning yourself a low stakes “book report” on the subject, inspired by elementary school. Or, reach out to a respected professional in your field for a coffee chat.
You can even have your lunch break double as a brain break with a mindful activity like MOEments, where you can do a quick deep dive into fascinating topics like the iconic legacy of the National Geographic magazine with one of the National Geographic Society's archivists Cathy Hunter.
More Midweek Adventures Await at the MOE
Curiosity doesn’t need to wait for Saturday, and neither should your next adventure. Whether you're testing your knowledge over trivia, sipping coffee alongside a marine ecologist or taking a mid-day deep dive into history, the National Geographic Museum of Exploration is here to help you break up the routine and find joy in the everyday.
